MY TRAVEL

Take a journey, that’s what My Travel is all about! Backpacking gets you out and about and best of all it puts you amongst the locals. We love travelling this way for these very reasons...

What makes My Travel unique is that we visit the great places you’ve heard about and experience them in different ways. We design and run the trips ourselves and want our travellers to have a real sense of achievement. After a long hike or tough bike journey, when you’re grubby and sweaty, we're sure you’ll look back, smile and think ‘I did that’.

Everyone wants a local experience, that special interaction with the people that makes you feel like you really did it, that you where really there. It’s not about how you shower, eat or sleep; it’s about how you travel. My Travel style travels local. We use a blend of public and private transport. ‘going local’ as we say, is the best way to experience the spaces in between.

The countries we travel to are vastly different in culture, development and custom. Bumpy outback roads, high speed trains, refined ryokans and humble guest houses are worlds apart. We have listed what you can expect from a My Travel tour in each country.

China Details

China
Group Size

We believe if you can’t fit around a Chinese dinner table you’re not boutique, we have a maximum group size of 8. This means you’ll never feel like a herd of sheep, and allows you get to/from in/out of places groups of 18 just can’t.

Accommodation

Our accommodation philosophy means we support local families and small hotels, the businesses that really need it. Things will be simple but that’s often part of the charm, after all nobody wants 20 story buildings springing up in unspoilt villages. Cleanliness and friendliness are our top priorities when choosing a place to sleep. On this style of tour you might have a roommate, always of the same gender, but only one, we don’t stay in 15 bed dorm rooms.

Transport

With the exception of a few private transfers to save time, My Travel itineraries are designed around local transport. Planes, trains, buses, boats, bikes, taxis and maybe even a tractor or two are all part of the mix.

Inclusions

Everyone on holiday has different 'must do' ideas, we try to keep things as flexible while preserving a good balance of inclusions. Most activities along the way are optional, however somethings are integral to your holiday experience and we wouldn't want anyone to miss out, specifics are always listed individually for each itinerary.

You can always expect all itinerary transport and accommodation to be included.

Meals

What you eat and drink is up to you. Daily budgets for food are listed as per the itinerary.

Japan Details

Japan
Group Size

Japan is a truly boutique country and space is a prized commodity. Large groups get in the way and prevent us from travelling truly local, so we keep the group size at 8. The small size means we can fit right in to traditional accommodation 'ryokans' and get a little closer to the Japanese way of living.

Accommodation

We embrace modern and traditional accommodation, giving you a blend of both makes your time that little bit more authentic. Modern hotels (business hotels) are just what you'd expect, beds, bathrooms and high-tech toilets. Think of business hotels as 3 - 4 star accommodation back home. Traditional accommodation in Japan is called a ryokan, that means futons on the floor, shoji (rice paper) screens, tatami floors and onsen bathing. A ryokan is like a family run bed and breakfast... except there's no bed. On this style of tour you might have a roommate, always of the same gender, but only one.

Japanese bathing is very different than life back home. The onsen, (a Japanese bath) is always located outside the room and is communal (women and men are separated). Incase you're wondering you do bathe naked (swimsuits/clothes are not accepted). This can be a little daunting for your first time, don't worry once you try it there is no better way to relax and unwind than in a nice hot onsen!

Transport

Train, train, train! We use the most efficient transport system in the world to its fullest, you'll be travelling on many Shinkansens (Bullet Trains), local trains, some trams, the odd taxi and a bus or two. Travellers on our tours are issued a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) for either 7 or 14 days depending on the itinerary.

Please note that JR Passes are only available to people entering Japan on a tourist visa, if you enter under any other visa class then you are unable to use the pass. Don't worry, if this is the case we can calculate a separate tour price for you, please let us know if you require this.
